I’m returning home to Australia (for good) and wanted to keep my Canadian number for a couple of months for anything I’ve forgotten to update (2FA etc) I would only turn on intermittently to check messages. Is this possible with Fizz? What’s the cheapest way?

You're able to be off of Fizz's network for 3 months officially. You will most likely get a warning at some point but I don't think it will be much of an issue because you aren't using data or calls. Opening a ticket to explain the situation after the warning would likely grant you a bit more time.

Most VoIP providers are hit or miss with handling short code SMS like for 2FA as it is to prevent spam/fraud so it would be best to stick with Fizz for the duration of your switch.

If you're able to, having an TOTP app like Google/Microsoft Authenticator can help you transition away from carrier based 2FA.

Otherwise, receiving texts abroad is always free so switching to a plan with nothing on it but provincial coverage will save you money for however long it takes to make the switch.

If all you want it for is receiving texts, switch to a province-wide coverage only plan. No calls, no voicemail, no outgoing texts, no data. Incoming texts are always free globally. Text messages may expire after some time, not sure what the timeout is with Fizz. But it could be as little as 48 hours. Thus, a dual-sim phone may be helpful such that your Canadian number would stay "always on" for incoming texts.

You could change your plan to the minimum possible or port your number to voip service.
